Southern Districts Farmers’ Association has demanded that the 3,000 registered workers of VB-G RAM G scheme of Palayampatti panchayat should be provided 125 days of job as envisaged under the programme by the Centre.In a statement, the Association Virudhunagar district president R. Rampandian said that though the erstwhile Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MGNREGS) provided 100 days of job in a year, the panchayat gave only 15 days of work in a year for the past several years.The association has been fighting for providing 100 days of work every year for the workers.The association has appealed to Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra to provide special attention to Palayampatti panchayat. The workers have been giving petition to the Collector every week, he said.Mr. Rampandian complained that the workers could not get adequate work under MGNREGS only because of the lack of functioning of Aruppukottai pachayat union. He wanted the 3,000 registered workers be divided into four teams and field supervisor should be appointed for each team to ensure providing work as per the guidelines of the Union Government scheme.In an unrelated incident, scores of residents of Palayampatti North Street staged a road roko protesting against erratic supply of drinking water over one month, here on Monday.The protesters said that despite having made several complaints to the officials, no action had been taken to set it right.As the residents blocked the road, the officials rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators with the promise that the drinking water problem would be set right at the earliest.
