Thirteen major wildfires burned more than 70,000 hectares of land across the Attica region between 2017 and 2025, the National Observatory of Athens has said, citing satellite data.
The data showed that around 38% of Attica’s forest cover – approximately 46,500 hectares – was destroyed during the nine-year period.
The largest losses were recorded in 2021, when the Geraneia, Varybobi, Keratea and Vilia wildfires consumed a combined 25,370 hectares. The second most destructive season came in 2023, with the Kouvaras, Dervenochoria and Parnitha fires burning 21,560 hectares.
By comparison, last year’s wildfires in Keratea destroyed 1,580 hectares, the smallest annual total recorded during the period.
