More than 5,700 hectares of land have been affected by recent wildfires in Crete’s southern Rethymno area and Paros, according to satellite data from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
The major wildfire in the Melabes area of Rethymno is estimated to have affected just over 4,000 hectares by midday Thursday, while the fire near Preveli impacted approximately 760 hectares. On Paros, the wildfire affected about 975 hectares.
The National Observatory of Athens’ meteo.gr service is continuing to monitor wildfire developments using satellite observations and fire-weather forecasting models.
More than 70 wildfires were burning across Greece on Friday afternoon, with roughly two-thirds having started within the previous 24 hours, according to the Fire Brigade.
