The Tamil Nadu Electrical Inspectorate, Energy Department, observed the National Electrical Safety Week 2026 across the State from June 26 to July 2 with the objective of creating awareness about electrical safety among the public. This year, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) observed Electrical Safety Day under the theme “Today’s Awareness, Tomorrow’s Prevention”.Explaining about the safety tips, Salem Electrical Inspector P. Jeyaprabha said that all electrical works should be carried out by qualified electricians. It is important to maintain a safe distance from electricity lines, transformers, poles, feeder pillars, and other electrical equipment. If sparking is noticed on a pole or transformer near your house, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited should be informed immediately. Avoid running internet, cable TV, or telephone wires on EB poles near your house. Ensure that house wiring is done using properly rated wires as per the load requirement and that the wires carry the ISI certification mark. Electrical wiring, earthing systems, and appliances should be inspected and serviced regularly. Check damaged or broken wires regularly and replace them immediately. Ensure that electrical panels and distribution boards remain accessible and are not obstructed. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan so that everyone knows how to exit safely during an emergency. Use only one appliance per socket and replace damaged plugs and switches immediately. Switch off appliances after use and unplug them and turn off the main switch when leaving home for an extended period. Never leave temporary or bare wire joints exposed. Keep electrical wires away from hot and wet surfaces. Do not run wires under carpets, mats, or doors, as they may get damaged and cause short circuits, Ms. Jeyaprabha added. The Namakkal Electrical Inspector D. Senthilkumar said that smoke alarms should be installed in homes, hotels, restaurants, and commercial buildings and tested frequently. Fire extinguishers should be kept ready in key areas such as kitchens, garages, and near fireplaces. Children should be taught about fire hazards and emergency response procedures.Air conditioners and other electrical equipment should be serviced periodically to prevent short circuits and sparking. Very old air conditioners should be replaced, as they consume more electricity and may pose safety risks due to equipment deterioration. Wear dry shoes and use insulated tools while carrying out any electrical work. Do not tamper with the electrical installation or distribution network, and do not allow anyone else to do so, as such actions can be life-threatening. Keep all objects at least 3 feet (1 metre) away from electrical panels and switches, Mr. Senthilkumar added. Published - July 05, 2026 09:10 pm IST
