Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) officials have been urged to create an awareness among the consumers to use quality electrical appliances in an effort to prevent electrical accidents.A training programme on electrical safety measures, prevention of electrical accidents and preparation of estimates was organised by CESC for all its branch officers working in various Operation and Maintenance Division of the Corporation on Wednesday.Retired BESCOM Deputy General Manager A. Ramesh, who participated in the training programme as a resource person, said the consumers should be educated about the benefits of using quality appliances carrying star ratings. Use of such appliances, he felt, can prevent electrical accidents.While stressing the need for branch officers to pay greater attention to ensuring their own safety, while also protecting electricity consumers, the public, animals and CESC properties, Mr. Ramesh said an analysis of data from previous years showed that although the number of electrical accidents had declined significantly in recent times, it had not yet been possible to bring such accidents down to zero. Therefore, safety procedures must be strictly followed, with attention being paid not only to personal safety, but also to the safety of consumers, the public, colleagues, animals and the corporation, he said.Speaking on the occasion, CESC Training Division Deputy General Manager M.Y. Hema said it was more important to take preventive measures to ensure that accidents did not occur than to look for solutions after an accident had taken place. Everyone should incorporate this principle into their work practices, she said.Safety should be given priority over speed while carrying out electrical works, and all necessary safety measures must be strictly followed, she said. Similarly, while preparing estimates, greater importance should be given to accuracy rather than merely the quantity of items estimated, Ms Hema said.Even a minor discrepancy while preparing an estimate could result in a difference of crores of rupees for the corporation. Therefore, officers bear the responsibility of thoroughly scrutinising the estimates, she said.CESC Training Division Assistant General Manager Jyothi N. was also present.
