In the last 75 days alone, eight caste killing incidents have been reported in Tamil Nadu and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should take measures to bring about a law to stop such heinous crimes, said A. Kathir, executive director of Evidence, here on Saturday.Speaking to media persons, he said between April 16 and June 30, caste killings had been reported in Tenkasi, Pudukottai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Myladuthurai and Thanjavur districts. A fact-finding team from Evidence visited Tharangabadi in Myladuthurai district on July 2.He said on June 30, a 20-year-old Scheduled Caste boy and a 16-year-old girl pf a Most Backward Community were found hanging. While the boy’s father Marimuthu alleged that it was a caste killing, the girl’s death was attributed to suicide after her parents rejected the marriage proposal with the SC boy.Interactions with the family members and others indicated that Porayar police officials had not discharged their duty as per law, he said.“The body of the girl was burnt hurriedly and the boy’s body was buried. Why did the police allow the girl’s parents to burn the body?. This has led to suspicion,” he said.Agreeing that the parents should have sensitised both the boy and the girl to stay calm till they turned 21 and 18, respectively, Mr. Kathir said instead they had beaten the boy and threatened the girl. When the police ought to have registered a case of murder and arrested the girl’s parents and others, only a case of unnatural death had been registered. “It is a clear case of caste killing,” he asserted. In another incident reported in Thanjavur district on June 14, Mr. Kathir said, a 17-year-old SC boy was in love with a BC girl. They were studying in a college. When the girl’s parents came to know about the affair, they forced her to end her life, according to the police confession made by the boy.Subsequently, without informing the police, the girl’s parents had performed the last rites. In the present situation, though the police had registered a case of unnatural death, scientific examination would not be possible as the body was cremated. When the police failed to act in a fair and transparent manner, the civil society would not only feel disturbed, but also experience insecurity and feel unsafe. The Evidence team had recently submitted a 6,000-page document to Justice K.N. Basha Commission, formed to examine the modalities by the State government for establishing a law for caste killings. The process should be expedited by the new government. The government should direct the CB-CID police to probe the Myladuthurai death. The police should be directed to register a case of murder and arrest culprits on the charge of forcing the victims to end lives in both the incidents.“The government should provide counselling at block levels for the victims. Teenagers should be sensitised to the consequences of love affairs and educate them in the right path by trained experts,” Mr. Kathir said, urging the CM to direct the police to handle such cases in an impartial manner.
