Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas and the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) president and CEO Manos Manousakis signed a memorandum of cooperation on Friday to strengthen the prevention of forest fires and protect Greece’s critical energy infrastructure.
According to the deal, the two agencies will design and implement firebreak zones along the electricity transmission lines of the national system that pass through forests and forested land, in order to avert threats to the energy infrastructure and ensure power supply remains uninterrupted.
The ministry said in a statement that the fire department will draw up an annual map to prioritize areas that need interventions, and ADMIE will assume responsibility for implementing the necessary clearing, pruning and creation of firebreaks.
In 2026, the first such areas, in Ippokratios Politia-Sfendali and the area of Ekali-Nea Penteli, have already been cleared and firebreaks covering over 51 hectares have been prepared.
