A DMK functionary allegedly assaulted a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police in Sivaganga district on Thursday (July 2, 2026) night. Following a complaint from the SI, the Kallal police registered a case against the functionary on Friday (July 3) and arrested him.On Thursday, the police received a tip-off that some men were engaged in mining sand from the Sathampathi Sarugani channel. The gang, however, fled the spot fearing trouble, leaving their vehicle at the spot. The police brought the vehicle to the station. On learning that the vehicle had been taken to the station, two persons, reportedly the owner and driver of the vehicle, picked an argument with the police personnel. At one point, Adaikalraj, 32, the owner, reportedly assaulted the SI.The SI lodged a complaint with the station. A case was registered and Adaikalraj was arrested.Preliminary inquiries revealed that Adaikalraj was a DMK functionary and the party’s youth wing deputy coordinator in Sivaganga district.Further investigation is under way.
