The Roman-era Odeon of Herod Atticus has now closed in order to undergo an extensive multiyear restoration and conservation project.

The project will improve access, repair stairwells eroded by use, improve public facilities such as toilets, lower the orchestra pit and install smaller sound systems that will direct the sound to the audience only, instead of the whole structure. Tests had showed audio waves had contributed to the eroding of the structure.

When it reopens, the 4,680-seat open-air amphitheater will host events year-round, the Ministry of Culture says.

The last event, Tuesday, was a concert by US singer, songwriter and pianist John Legend.
