A landmark of postwar Athens is being brought back to life.
The former Broadway cinema, long shuttered inside the legendary Broadway Arcade at the corner of Patission and Agiou Meletiou streets, will reopen in December as Athens Broadway, an 800-seat theater developed by Tagaris Theatrical Enterprises.
The project aims not only to transform the historic movie house but also to restore the arcade’s shared spaces, a symbol of 1970s Athens.
Developers describe the undertaking as a comprehensive revival that looks to the future of entertainment, public space and the Patission corridor while preserving the site’s architectural identity.
Opened in 1970, the Broadway cinema became a favorite among younger audiences for its pop aesthetic, modern atmosphere and comfort. Restoration plans retain key design elements, including the original seating, the colorful acoustic ceiling panels and the oversized black-and-white wall of photographs that embodied the visual culture of the decade.
