Athens is inaugurating a new cultural institution, the “Festival of Olympia,” running June 21 to July 25 in the Zappeion Gardens in the heart of the Greek capital.

A newly configured outdoor amphitheater seating more than 1,000 will host theater productions, concerts, sports and participatory events. The festival opens on World Music Day with a free concert.

“The true meaning of the Olympics was never just competition,” said Lefteris Giovanidis, president of the Olympia and Zappeion Legacy Committee. “It was the meeting. And from the meeting, civilization is born.“

Organizers say the festival aims to become an annual cultural landmark for Athens and its visitors.
