Athens is launching a new culture, arts and sports institution this year, the Olympion Festival, running from Sunday through July 25, at the new Zappeion Gardens Amphitheater.

Organizers hope it becomes a centerpiece of the capital’s summer cultural calendar. The festival opens Sunday – World Music Day – at 9 p.m. with “Swinging with the Big Band,” featuring the Athens Big Band performing jazz and big-band classics under musical director Sami Amiri.

Admission is free, with entry via Vassilissis Olgas Avenue. The festival is sponsored by Qualco Group, with support from the Institute of Hellenic Music Heritage.
