Top taxpayers and departmental officers being felicitated during the GST Day celebrations at GST Bhavan in Coimbatore on Wednesday

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collected by the Coimbatore Central GST Commissionerate increased from ₹1,105 crore in 2017-18 to ₹4,388.72 crore in 2025-26, the highest since the introduction of GST, Principal Commissioner of GST and Central Excise, Coimbatore, Dinesh P. Pangarkar said at the GST Day celebrations held at GST Bhavan on Wednesday (July 1).Marking nine years of GST implementation, Mr. Pangarkar said the Commissionerate recorded 12.35% revenue growth in 2025-26, exceeding the national GST growth rate. He said GST collections touched ₹2.42 lakh crore in April 2026, while monthly national collections now regularly exceed ₹1.8 lakh crore.He said the taxpayer base in the Coimbatore Commissionerate had doubled over the past nine years. During 2025-26, the Commissionerate processed 3,823 refund claims and sanctioned ₹790 crore in GST refunds within the prescribed time limit.Mr. Pangarkar said taxpayer facilitation had been strengthened through GST Suvidha Kendras and GST Seva Kendras. A new GST Seva Kendra was opened at Aditya Towers on Tiruchi Road in May, and the GST Suvidha Kendra was shifted there for the convenience of taxpayers. Monthly meetings are also being conducted with MSMEs to address grievances and explain changes in GST rules and notifications, he added.Shankar Vanavarayar, president of Kumaraguru Institutions, described GST as a transformative reform that created a unified national market through a transparent digital tax system. He said Coimbatore’s economy was growing at 12%, compared with the national growth rate of 7% to 8%, and noted that the removal of inter-State checkposts had improved the movement of goods across the country.K.R. Nagarajan, founder and chairman of Ramraj Cotton, said GST collected by businesses was public money and should be remitted without attempts to evade taxes.
