The Democratic Alliance says it secured a victory for residents after the Endumeni Local Municipality's 2026/27 budget failed to pass. The party has accused the IFP-led administration of tabling an unfunded budget and is calling on the KwaZulu-Natal government to intervene.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the failure of the Endumeni Local Municipality's 2026/27 budget to secure approval, describing the outcome as a victory for residents and calling for urgent intervention by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DA said its councillors, Nash Gopie and Mohamed Saleem Abdool, refused to support what the party described as an unfunded budget that would have deepened the municipality's financial challenges while failing to improve service delivery.
According to the DA, the party had opposed the budget since March, arguing that it committed the municipality to expenditure without a credible plan to generate the necessary revenue.
"The DA refused to pass a budget that treats the people of Endumeni as an afterthought," the party said.
