Ekurhuleni member of the mayoral committee for finance Jongizizwe Dlabathi has expressed his hope that the municipality's 2026/27 budget will finally be passed after several unsuccessful attempts.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality looks set to finally pass its 2026/27 budget by the June 30 deadline after three unsuccessful attempts and avoid being taken over by the Gauteng provincial government.
On Tuesday, the municipality, which is run by an ANC-led coalition, will hold an extraordinary council meeting in its fourth attempt to pass the R71 billion budget.
Ahead of the meeting, DA Gauteng provincial leader and federal chairperson Solly Msimanga said the party went out and engaged the ANC and other smaller political parties.
“Unfortunately, the only people that came around the table with us were the ANC and we did engage with the ANC and say how do we then get wins … This is what the ANC has agreed to, they have put it in black and white. We have now signed off on that,” he said.
