The IFP-led Endumeni could be dissolved next week if it again fails to pass the budget.
The IFP-led Endumeni Local Municipality in Dundee in north-west KwaZulu-Natal is set to be dissolved after failing for the sixth time to pass the budget.
The municipality has been given the last chance by the provincial Treasury to pass the budget by next Friday or get dissolved. The IFP’s problem in the municipality is that it has been dumped by its historical partner, the DA, which has constantly voted with the ANC to block the six previous attempts to pass the budget.
Seeing the impasse, the DA-led Treasury under Finance MEC Francois Rodgers summoned the municipality mayor Mcebo Mkhize and his executive committee (Exco) on Tuesday to come and explain why the council has been failing to budget. Rodgers told the Exco that it was breaching the Municipal Finance Management Act by failing to pass the budget and directed the council to try for the last time next week.
However, the ANC, with the support of the DA, insisted that they would never allow the budget to be passed before a Disaster Management corruption report is tabled. The report is said to be implicating the mayor who allegedly pocketed R800,000, however, the IFP-led council is refusing to table the report. The ANC is also demanding that the motion against the mayor is tabled before the budget is passed.
