Thousands of March and March supporters took to the streets in Durban on June 30, demanding that illegal immigrants leave the country.
EThekwini Municipality has welcomed the peaceful and orderly conduct of widely observed marches held on June 30, noting that no major incidents of violence, loss of life, or widespread damage to infrastructure were reported across the city.
Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba commended residents, march organisers and law enforcement agencies for ensuring the demonstrations were conducted responsibly, describing the outcome as a victory for public safety, social stability and democratic engagement.
Mayor Xaba said the conduct of residents demonstrated that democratic rights can be exercised in a manner that safeguards lives, property and community wellbeing.
“As the City leadership, we are pleased with the conduct of residents who participated in the marches held across eThekwini. We are encouraged that there were no major incidents involving loss of life or widespread damage to infrastructure.
