The Coimbatore Corporation is preparing to take over the operation and maintenance of the Pilloor III drinking water supply scheme from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.The city’s total drinking water supply, including Pilloor III, is about 330 million litres a day, sourced from various schemes.The Pilloor III project was implemented by the TWAD Board to meet the city’s growing water demand. Work on the ₹780-crore project began in 2020 and was completed in February 2024. The TWAD Board currently treats the water and supplies it to the Corporation for distribution.Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, along with TWAD Board officials, recently inspected the Pilloor dam and reviewed water storage levels and supply arrangements ahead of the proposed transfer.Corporation officials said the TWAD Board’s operation and maintenance period ended in February this year. However, the civic body had requested the Board to continue operations until the elections. Following the elections, the Corporation decided to assume responsibility for the scheme.Officials said taking over the operation and maintenance would enable the Corporation to avoid paying service charges to the TWAD Board. The civic body would instead float tenders directly for maintenance works and make payments to contractors, giving it greater control over the scheme’s operations.Officials said the takeover process could take about a month as the Corporation has to finalise the operation and maintenance cost and decide whether to issue a single comprehensive tender for the entire scheme or invite separate tenders for different components of the work.
