The Coimbatore Corporation’s efforts to provide round-the-clock drinking water supply under its 24x7 water supply project continue to face a key challenge — inadequate water availability in the Siruvani and Pilloor reservoirs.Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the project currently covered around 1.2 lakh of the targeted 1.5 lakh household service connections (HSCs) across 105.6 sq. km, covering 58 wards fully and two wards partially.“The challenge in providing continuous supply is the availability of water in the reservoirs. Rainfall this year has been lower, and unless the sources have adequate storage, the project cannot ensure the quantity required for distribution,” he said.The city requires around 330 million litres a day (MLD) to provide continuous water supply to households. “Once the required quantity is available continuously, we can distribute water to households 24x7,” Mr. Ravi Teja said.As on Wednesday, the Siruvani reservoir had 27.42 feet of water against the permitted depth of 44.61 feet. The supply was 60.95 MLD against 101.40 MLD. Pilloor reservoir’s water level was 91.75 feet against its full level of 100 feet, with a discharge of 3,000 cusecs.Officials said the Pilloor III scheme, located downstream of the dam, can pump up to 130 MLD to the city when the dam maintained a discharge of 6,000 cusecs. At lower discharge levels, the quantity of water available for pumping would also vary.Meanwhile, the Corporation has submitted a report to the State government seeking ₹18 crore for repairs at Siruvani to address seepage. Officials said around 10 MLD was being lost through seepage.Kerala officials are preparing a comprehensive report on the repair requirements, after which priority works will be identified and forwarded to the TWAD Board for approval and funding.
