Coimbatore Corporation has resumed construction of a proposed sewage treatment plant (STP) near Chinnavedampatti Lake after temporarily halting the work following objections from residents. The work was halted after residents reiterated their opposition to the project during a site inspection by Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja on July 29. Subsequently, a committee comprising officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD Board), the Corporation, the Water Resource Department (WRD) and the Revenue Department, besides a professor from Government College of Technology (GCT), was constituted to examine alternative sites suggested by the residents. The committee inspected the alternative sites and is learnt to have submitted a report stating that the locations suggested by the residents were not suitable for construction of the STP. Following the report, the Corporation has resumed work at the original site near Chinnavedampatti Lake.V.S. Kalisamy, a farmer leading the protest, said the land near the Chinnavedampatti dump yard, classified as mandhai poramboke, was initially identified for the STP in 2023. However, the site was later shifted to the present location near Chinnavedampatti Lake without referring to the revenue records or obtaining the necessary permission from the Water Resources Department (WRD), which maintains the land, he alleged. He alleged that the Corporation had resumed the work despite the legal issues surrounding the site and a High Court order. “We are determined to approach the Madras High Court again and also file a case before the National Green Tribunal,” he said.
