More than 50 people living in the vicinity of Chinnavedampatti lake petitioned Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja during the weekly public grievances redress meeting on Tuesday (July 28), urging the civic body to halt the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) near the water body.The residents questioned the Corporation on whether a comprehensive livelihood impact assessment and feasibility study had been carried out before the project was taken up. They also sought to know why the Corporation was proceeding with the work despite sustained opposition from residents.Responding to the petitioners, Mr. Ravi Teja said that the issues raised by the residents had already been considered by the Madras High Court in the writ petition filed against the project. He said the court had found no legal infirmity in the construction of the STP at the site and had not granted any stay on the project. Since there was no legal restraint and the court had passed orders after examining the issues, the Corporation could not stop the work, he said.The residents, however, urged the Commissioner to reconsider the decision on humanitarian grounds. They requested that the work be suspended until they approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) challenging the project.Following a prolonged discussion, the Commissioner agreed to inspect the project site later this week.
