Explore Slovakia’s overlooked south where Franz Schubert taught.

Welcome back Slovak Roots fans!

It is time for another edition of our Slovak Roots newsletter, dedicated to the community of people with ties to Slovakia.

In this newest instalment, you will visit the Levice Region which has ties to a famous composer and confectioner from Austria; learn that behind one of the most important technologies of the 20th century was a son of Slovak emigrants to the US; and get to meet a Slovak American who tries to maintain connection with his Slovak roots.

In the Levice Region, history links small Slovak towns in the region to Vienna’s cultural giants. For example, in 1818, composer Franz Schubert arrived in the unassuming town of Želiezovce to teach music to the daughters of Count Ján Karol Esterházy de Galatha. Local lore maintains that he fell in love with a miller’s daughter from nearby Sikenica, while historians have long noted his affection for Caroline Esterházy, one of his pupils.
