In a huge jolt to the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) has managed to wean away Sachin Ahir, a UBT Sena leader from Worli. Ahir joined the Shiv Sena on Tuesday and filed his nomination for the Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Ahir's entry into the Shiv Sena directly challenges Aaditya Thackeray's hold in his Worli assembly constituency.Ahir was a former MLA from Worli. In 2019, Ahir who was then in the Nationalist Congress Party, was brought to the Shiv Sena to smoothen Aaditya's maiden election from Worli constituency. So keen were the Thackerays to ensure Aaditya's victory that they made Ahir an MLC and Sunil Shinde, the sitting Sena MLA from the constituency, also an MLC.After he was brought in, Ahir became a close aide of Aaditya and used to oversee all the works in Worli on the latter's behalf. This is why Ahir is considered a prize catch for the Shiv Sena."I don't think Aaditya will sleep tonight or even for a week. He (Aaditya) won twice because of Sachin Ahir. He did not win due to his work, it was due to Ahir," said Nilesh Rane, a Shiv Sena MLA.Lamenting Ahir's exit, Aaditya said it would not make much of an impact. "There will not be any major changes on the ground. Worli remains our fort and will continue to be. We have given him (Ahir) everything. We made him an MLC and gave him several posts, including to his daughter. What more could we do for them?" Aaditya said.Addressing a press conference later, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, accompanied by Ahir, said in the coming days more people would join the party. "Ours is a party of grassroots workers. In the following days, a number of grassroots workers will join and our strength will increase."There is talk within the Shiv Sena that Ahir could be pitted against Aaditya in the 2029 assembly polls. Both Shinde and Ahir kept their cards close to their chests. Shinde said the elections were still far away. Ahir claimed, "Whatever responsibility is given to me, I will give my best."The development comes barely a few days after six UBT Sena Lok Sabha MPs joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
