Councillors on Monday expressed concern over incomplete underground drainage (UGD) works in certain parts of the city and sought details of the areas and the number of connections provided under the scheme at the Nagercoil Corporation Council meeting held here. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Mayor Mary Princy Latha in the presence of Corporation Commissioner R. Ishwarya.Councillors of several wards said the UGD works remained incomplete, and many parts of the city continued to face drainage overflow on roads. They sought details of wards of where the UGDS works had been completed and number of household connections provided. They further alleged that several roads in the city were filled with potholes and no major development works had been undertaken during the past few months. They also expressed their dissatisfaction over irregular collection of garbage and accumulation of waste on the roadside including ward 16 of North Zone.Concerns were also raised over unauthorised parking of private vehicles at Swami Nagaraja temple grounds and urged the authorities to conduct regular monitoring and take appropriate action. While the councillors welcomed the initiative of the Corporation to increase the wages of temporary workers from ₹650 to ₹740 and mosquito control workers to ₹450 from ₹330, they expressed dissatisfaction over development works that had stalled in the city for the past couple of months.Responding to their concerns, officials said measures would be taken to complete the UGD works, and a detailed report on the project would be given. They added that stalled development works would be reviewed and necessary action would be taken to resume them. Published - June 29, 2026 07:49 pm IST
