DMK councillors on Wednesday (June 17) accused Coimbatore Corporation officials, particularly those from the Engineering Department, of failing to keep elected representatives informed about civic works and not responding to their queries.They raised the allegation during the Corporation council meeting chaired by Mayor R. Ranganayaki, the first council session after the recently concluded Assembly elections.Councillors, including zonal chairpersons and standing committee members, alleged that officials were carrying out works without consulting them and were not providing details when sought.Before the commencement of the meeting at the Victoria Town Hall, the Mayor demanded that the portrait of former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin be displayed in the council hall, citing a government order. DMK councillors supported the demand. Congress councillors, led by floor leader Alagu Jayabalan, insisted that the portrait of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj should also be displayed. The exchange led to a brief commotion, with members of both parties engaging in a war of words.Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, who attended his first council meeting after assuming charge on June 3, assured the members that the portrait of Mr. Stalin would be displayed.AIADMK councillors submitted a petition to the Commissioner urging the State government to constitute a special investigation team to probe the alleged corruption in the Corporation during the previous DMK administration.Ward 84 councillor Alima Begum (SDPI) staged a walkout, alleging that her requests for establishing an anganwadi centre and relaying roads in her ward had remained pending for over a year.Ward 63 councillor Santhi Murugan questioned a resolution proposing ₹85 lakh for an augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) laboratory, stating that the facility had already been completed. Following the discussion, the Mayor withheld 12 resolutions pertaining to the establishment of AR/VR laboratories in schools. The remaining 71 of the total 83 resolutions were passed.Ward 59 councillor Mohan Medhu attended the meeting as an Independent member following his exit from the CPI.
