During the Council meeting of the Nagercoil Corporation held on Wednesday, Councillors raised concerns over various civic projects being implemented, including Chemmankulam tank restoration, progress of integrated bus terminal in Vadasery and drinking water wastage due to damaged pipelines in the city.The meeting was held under the leadership of Deputy Mayor Mary Princy Latha, in the presence of Corporation Commissioner R. Ishwarya.As soon as the meeting commenced, Councillors demanded discussions on the restoration of Chemmankulam tank, which is being carried out at a cost of around ₹6.50 crore. During the discussion Councillors raised questions over the source of water for the tank after restoration and details on measures to prevent sewage from entering it. They also sought information regarding the integrated bus terminus project in Vadasery.Councillors also highlighted the accumulation of garbage at the Valampurivilai dumping yard, stating that frequent fire incidents at the site have affected the nearby residents. They further expressed concerns over increased mosquito menace across the city, alleging that anti-mosquito spraying was not being carried out effectively. They warned that the situation could lead to dengue, adding that several residents had already been affected. They urged the corporation to prevent dengue prevention measures.Councillors also sought immediate action to curb the growing stray dog menace. They further pointed out that a damaged pipeline in the Melasoorankudi area had been leaking water for several months despite repeated petitions to officials.Responding to the queries, officials stated that desilting work at Chemmankulam tank was under way and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent sewage from entering the waterbody. Residents in the area have been instructed to install soak pits to ensure household wastewater does not flow into the tank and such facilities have already been provided in several locations.They added that the first phase of the UGDS work in Nagercoil has already been completed, while estimates have been prepared for the second phase. Officials noted that the construction of the integrated bus terminus in Vadasery was progressing at a brisk pace.Officials further added mosquito control measures were being carried out daily across the city and the staff members obtained the signature of the respective ward Councillors after spraying operations. Regarding dengue, they said that only few areas had reported cases and that intensive preventive measures were under way.Addressing stray dog menace, officials stated that steps are being taken to control the stray dog population through sterilization programmes, and dogs are being administered with anti-rabies vaccination as a preventive measure.At the meeting, ward 3 Councillor Arul Sabitha Rexalin staged a sit-in protest inside the council hall, alleging that a contractor who executed works in her ward had spoken to her in a derogatory and threatening manner. She was joined by ward 5 Councillor Udhaya Kumar and ward 46 Councillor Veera Soora Perumal alleging irregularities in Corporation and pressing for various demands.
