Coimbatore district has set a target of administering oral polio vaccine to 2.97 lakh children below the age of five as part of the National pulse polio immunisation campaign, which was launched by Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Sunday (June 28, 2026).The Minister administered oral polio vaccine to children at CMCH and later at the Seethalakshmi Urban Primary Health Centre.The Minister later told reporters that 1,615 vaccination centres are established across the district, including 1,124 in rural areas and 491 in urban. In addition, 32 special booths have been set up at bus stands, railway stations, the airport and other crowded locations, along with 22 mobile teams.Within Coimbatore City, the campaign is conducted at 337 locations, including 33 Urban Primary Health Centres, 64 Urban Wellness Centres, three government hospitals, six private hospitals, 50 government and Corporation schools, 139 Anganwadi centres and community halls, 10 mobile camps, 10 transit camps at railway and bus stations, and other locations. The Corporation aims to administer the vaccine to around 1.41 lakh children below the age of five.The Minister said 6,345 personnel, including Health Department staff, Anganwadi workers, officials from other departments, volunteers and members of Rotary clubs, had been deployed for the district-wide campaign.Urging parents to ensure that all children below the age of five received the vaccine during the special campaign, he said children should be given the oral polio vaccine even if they had received previous doses.
