The Pulse Polio immunisation campaign was carried out in Tiruchi district on Sunday to cover a little over 1,71 lakh children aged below five.The special immunisation drive was carried out through a total of 1,602 centres, including 1,314 in rural areas, 242 in Corporation limits, and 46 in urban areas. About 6,600 workers were engaged in the exercise to administer polio drops to 1,71,518 children.Polio drops were administered from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at primary health centres, sub-health centres, schools, government hospitals, private hospitals, anganwadi centres, places of worship, tourist destinations, bus stands, and railway stations.The pulse polio immunisation campaign on Sunday covered 1,64,908 children aged under five in Thanjavur district. Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare R. Vinoth initiated the campaign. The children were administered the oral drops at 1,609 centres, including 126 urban centres and 1,483 rural centres. About 6,436 workers were deployed under the monitoring of 217 supervisors.Polio drops were administered to over 1.16 lakh children in Pudukottai district on Sunday. The drops were administered to children at 1,356 centres. A total of 5,596 persons, including officials from the Health Department and municipalities, representatives from service organisations, and SHG members, were involved in the exercise. Mohamed Farvas administered the drops to children.In Mayiladuthurai, polio immunisation camps were held at 582 centres to administer oral polio drops to 66,636 children aged below five. On Sunday, 62,583 children were administered the vaccine, achieving a coverage of 93.7%. A total of 2,332 personnel, including those from the health, revenue, and education departments, besides those from the self-help groups and service organisations, will be involved in the exercise throughout the district.In Nagapattinam district, 50,114 children aged below five were targeted under the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme. On Sunday, 49,465 children received the oral polio vaccine. From Monday, field workers will undertake door-to-door visits for three consecutive days across the district to administer polio drops to children who were missed during the immunisation drive, a press note said.
