A merchant marine sailors’ union will launch a 24-hour strike on passenger ferries sailing from the port of Rafina on Friday, July 3, the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Mariners (PENEN) said Saturday.
The union is protesting over safety issues for crews and ships, arguing that the existing infrastructure at the port can no longer serve the current number of ships and is unsafe.
PENEN says the available berths are sufficient for approximately five ships, but currently eleven are being served, which means that ferries sometimes have to remain anchored outside the port or sail to other ports.
The strike will begin at 6 a.m. on Friday and will end at 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, while a rally is scheduled for 10 in the morning in front of the “Super Ferry.”
