A merchant marine sailors’ union has announced a three-hour work stoppage at Rafina port, in eastern greater Athens, on Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., citing concerns over crew and vessel safety.

In a statement, the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Sailors (PENEN) said the main issue is the excessive number of scheduled ferry arrivals compared to the port’s docking capacity.

The union noted that while Rafina has berthing space for around five vessels, up to eleven ships are currently being handled, forcing some to remain anchored offshore or frequently change berths.

PENEN said this situation places crews under constant operational pressure, particularly at night, resulting in reduced rest time and increased working strain.
