The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), the marble venue that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, is undergoing its first comprehensive renovation.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee has launched a multiphase upgrade program that begins with the full replacement of the athletics track surface. The new tartan, manufactured in Germany and bearing the colors of the Greek flag, carries World Athletics certification qualifying the venue to host Diamond League competitions.
Subsequent phases will include a thorough cleaning of the stadium’s famous white marble surfaces and the installation of a modern lighting system to improve conditions for athletes and spectators alike.
HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos said the upgrade is expected to create conditions for Diamond League track-and-field competitions at the venue as early as 2027.
