Greece’s Olympic Rowing Center at Schinias, northeast of Athens, was delivered to the sports community during a ceremony on Saturday, following a full restoration of the facilities that had been largely abandoned since they were last used in the 2004 Olympic Games.

The facility, which was experiencing significant damage from years of neglect, underwent an extensive program of cleaning, restoration and technical maintenance. The work initially focused on cleaning and removing reeds, dense vegetation and debris from key points of the facility, while extensive interventions were carried out on all the platforms.

Crews also restored the hydraulic channels connecting the lake with the rowing track and the point of exit to the sea. Specialized underwater work was carried out in the narrow and closed channels by certified divers. The interventions also included cleaning and inspecting the gates, the protective mesh, the drainage pipes and the sealing mechanisms to restore their functionality.

“It is a great day for the rowing track, this emblematic facility that gave birth to champions, olympians, people who will continue this innovative and strong tradition of Greece in rowing as well as canoeing and kayaking,” said Deputy Minister of Sports, Yiannis Vroutsis.
