According to party sources, Ugwu defected to the NDC shortly before the party's primary election and was interested in securing the House of Representatives ticket for the Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency.

A fresh crisis appears to be brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the outcome of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, as party stakeholders, elders and supporters of the party's candidate, Bishop Oscar Ossai, accuse certain members of engaging in activities that allegedly undermined the party's chances at the polls.

The controversy has sparked intense debate within the opposition party, with allegations of internal sabotage, anti-party activities and disloyalty threatening to widen existing divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party stakeholders, members of the NDC Elders Forum, leaders of thought in Nsukka Zone and supporters of the party's senatorial candidate, Bishop Oscar Ossai, have rallied behind his candidature while expressing concern over what they describe as anti-party activities allegedly perpetrated by some aggrieved aspirants who failed to secure the party's nominations for future elections.

At the centre of the controversy is former federal lawmaker, Hon. Dr. Patrick Asadu, who, alongside other dissatisfied aspirants, has been accused by some party members of boycotting campaign activities and allegedly working against the interests of the NDC during the June 20 by-election.
