Florida construction company Deltona Corporation has withdrawn its proposal to build a data center in Citrus County after coming up against opposition from residents and local authorities.“On behalf of our client, Deltona Corporation, we respectfully submit this formal notice of withdrawal of applications CPA-2-2025-000012 and CPA 2025-000013 concerning the Holder Industrial Park,” reads the letter sent to Citrus County on Tuesday June 23, as reported by local blog The Citrus Insider.Just the day before, Citrus County Commissioners had voted to deny the company’s request to delay a decision on its application, which would have taken place on July 14.Deltona was proposing to rezone a 798-acre land parcel between North Lecanto Highway, North Tram Road, and North Florida Avenue in order to make way for a data center. This would be combined with an adjacent 557-acre site called the Holder Industrial Park, giving the project a footprint of around 1,400 acres. It is unclear whether Deltona has prior experience with building data centers, as the company is primarily known as a homebuilder.Opposition to the data center has been organized and fierce. ‘No Data Center Citrus,’ an organization opposed to the data center, sports a website with information about important meeting dates, a newsletter, a chat group, and templates for public comment against the facility.Other local media, including the blog Just Wright Citrus and The Citrus Insider, have also criticized the data center.Citrus County is located on Florida’s northwest central coast, around 76 miles (122km) north of Tampa. In May, the state enacted a data center law that will regulate how data centers are permitted, powered, and financed, notably preventing utilities from passing infrastructure costs onto consumers. The law will kick in on July 1, 2026.
