A large fire in a local plastics factory in the west Athens district of Egaleo continued to burn for a second day on Wednesday, while authorities closed the street in front of it in both directions.

The fire was burning due to the huge volume of flammable materials that were in the warehouses and on the factory premises. Thick black and white smoke is still rising from the building, as a large firefighting contingent continued to battle the blaze.

The air in the wider area was stifling due to the burning of plastic and authorities recommending that residents, especially the elderly and people with respiratory problems, avoid unnecessary travel and keep the windows of their homes closed.

On Tuesday, part of the building’s roof collapsed while fire fighters were inside, but nobody was reported injured.

The fire reignited several times forcing the Traffic Police to stop traffic on Orpheus Street, from Agias Annis Street, towards Kifissos Avenue.
