Firefighters are continuing efforts to contain and extinguish a fire at a recycling facility near Larissa, in Thessaly, with officials warning it could take several days to fully bring the blaze under control.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the fire, which broke out late Friday in the village of Omorfochori, has been confined to the business premises. However, large piles of tires continue to burn, sending thick smoke toward Larissa.
More than 50 firefighters with 22 vehicles, assisted by water tankers and earthmoving machinery, are involved in the operation.
The response has been complicated by repeated explosions from propane cylinders and other flammable materials at the site, increasing the risk of flare-ups.
Fire service investigators are examining the cause of the blaze. Relatives of the facility’s owners have alleged that the fire was started deliberately.
