Five people have been hospitalized with burn injuries, two of whom are in serious condition, after a large blaze consumed a factory in Asproryrgos, West Attica, on Tuesday morning, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.
One of the injured was rescued by the Fire Department, while the other left the scene on his own, according to the report. Doctors at the Thriasio Hospital have intubated the two victims who suffered serious burns.
The Fire Department said the blaze started at around 8 a.m. at the premises of a business at the intersection of Megaridos and Chiou streets and has developed a strong pyrothermal load. Media reports indicated the business is a recycling facility.
ERT said the factory has been completely destroyed and thick black smoke has covered the wider area, creating a suffocating atmosphere. It also reported that a truck with a propane tank is located inside the company’s premises, which significantly increases the risk of an explosion.
Earlier, emergency alerts were sent via Greece’s 112 system to residents on Megaridos Street, urging them to evacuate via Agiou Georgiou Street.
