Greek authorities are investigating the death of a woman from unspecified complications that developed after she gave birth at a hospital on the island of Lesvos, last Friday (June 19).

The 36-year-old doctor delivered her baby at the Mytilene Hospital but developed a fever during her recovery and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on Monday. By Tuesday, her health had deteriorated and the doctors decided to intubate her and then transfer her to a hospital in Athens.

She died during the airlift and shortly before the plane had landed in Athens.

Authorities have opened an investigation while waiting for the laboratory tests to clarify the cause of death.

Petros Macheiras, director of the obstetrics clinic at the hospital where the woman died, told state-run broadcaster ERT he was shocked by the development.
