Monuments are not fortresses that should remain impregnable. They need to be opened up to the present, to be vibrant parts of the city’s modern fabric. And in order to fulfill this role, their operation needs to be governed by a set of common and transparent rules. It needs to abide by certain aesthetic standards. Historical monuments can’t just be worn out and transformed into concert venues overnight, without meeting some basic requirements. Yes, our country’s monuments should be used; but they should not be subjected to degradation.
