The body of Christian Catholic Apostolic Holy Spirit Church in Zion president Thamsanqa Elijah Nkonyane has been exhumed following a Pietermaritzburg High Court order aimed at determining the location of his remains.

On Monday, members of the South African Police Service's Forensic Pathology Services and Forensic Science Laboratory exhumed Nkonyane's body from the backyard of the church's mission house at its headquarters in Osizweni, Newcastle, popularly known as eNyonini Mission.

The exhumation marks the latest chapter in a controversy that erupted after Nkonyane's funeral on June 6.

The funeral, attended by thousands of mourners, was disrupted after Nkonyane's estranged wife, Dolly Nkonyane, known as MaNgcobo, obtained an urgent interdict from the Pietermaritzburg High Court seeking to halt the proceedings.
