The funeral of Christian Catholic Apostolic Holy Spirit Church in Zion president Thamsanqa Elijah Nkonyane in Osizweni, Newcastle, earlier this month. The service was halted towards its conclusion after his estranged wife and family obtained a court interdict. On Monday, Nkonyane's body was exhumed from the backyard of the church's mission house following a Pietermaritzburg High Court order granted on June 18, paving the way for his reburial by his family and estranged wife. But now a new twist has triggered a postmortem.

The remains of Christian Catholic Apostolic Holy Spirit Church in Zion leader, President Thamsanqa Elijah Nkonyane, popularly known as the leader of eNyonini Mission, have been transferred from the Zidwe Mortuary to forensic pathologists for a postmortem examination after his family discovered what they believe to be a head injury during the exhumation of his body.

The Nkonyane family said they want clarity on the church leader's cause of death following the discovery.

Nkonyane died last month at his home in Durban, after reportedly suffering a fall. At the time of his death, he was estranged from his wife, Dolly Nkonyane (MaNgcobo).

His death triggered a bitter legal battle between his family and his partner, Siveni Mazibuko (MaKhuzwayo), over funeral arrangements.
