As the UK braces itself for a heatwave with temperatures predicted to reach 40C, many people will be looking for ways to stay cool - but experts are urging parents to take important safety precautions when using a paddling pool09:51, 23 Jun 2026As temperatures across the UK are forecast to soar to 40 degrees this week, countless people will be searching for ways to beat the heat while still enjoying the glorious sunshine, with paddling pools proving a hit online. But as families gear up for the heatwave by dusting off their paddling pools, children's toy specialists at Outdoortoys are urging parents to exercise extra caution when using them.Alex Price, product manager at Outdoortoys, stresses the importance of carrying out safety checks before getting started. "Paddling pools are a fun way to cool off in the warmer weather, but it's vital to ensure the water is safe for young children," he said."While filling the pool with cold water from the hose may seem tempting, it can be too cold for babies and toddlers, who are particularly sensitive to temperature changes."Cold water can lead to discomfort, chills, or even hypothermia if young children stay in it for too long."The optimum temperature for children's paddling pools in the UK is widely regarded to be somewhere between 29 degrees and 31 degrees.According to Price, a straightforward method of checking the temperature is by using a bath thermometer."If it's too cold, top up with warmer water or consider playing earlier in the day when temperatures are higher," he said. What should you do when using a paddling pool?1. Deep clean paddling pools before first useIf you're dusting off the paddling pool for the first time this summer, it's essential to give it a proper clean before you fill it up.Pools that have been stored throughout winter can harbour dust, mould, or bacteria, especially if they've been stashed away in sheds, garages, or lofts.Price says: "A simple and child-safe way to clean it is by using a vinegar solution. Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water, then use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down all surfaces. Pay close attention to folds, seams, and inflatable rings where dirt and mould can build up."Once cleaned, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow the pool to fully air dry before filling. Taking a few minutes to deep clean your paddling pool helps ensure the water stays fresh and safe for children to enjoy."2. Keep pools clean and safe around petsHouseholds with pets need to be particularly vigilant when it comes to paddling pool hygiene, according to the expert. He says: "Dogs and other animals can easily carry mud, bacteria, and loose hair into the water, even if they're just running through the garden and not directly using the pool."This can quickly affect water quality and potentially pose a risk to young children, especially if the pool is used throughout the day. If pets have access to the area, it's a good idea to refresh the water regularly and consider changing it entirely, even if you haven't seen them go in."3. Never leave children unattended around waterPrice says: "Even just 2cm of water can pose a drowning risk to young children. Always keep a watchful eye and never leave them alone, even for a moment."Drowning can happen quickly and silently, without splashing or shouting, which makes constant supervision essential."He adds: "Where possible, stay within arm's reach of younger children and avoid distractions like phones, reading, or stepping away 'just for a second.'"It's also important to empty paddling pools immediately after use or securely cover them, as standing water can still pose a risk even when playtime is over."What to do with your pool after useIt's important to cover or empty your paddling pool after use, according to the expert. He says: "This not only keeps curious little ones safe but also prevents accidents. Plus, a cover helps keep leaves and debris out, making your next swim even more enjoyable."Article continues belowFor more information, visit Outdoortoys' paddling pool safety guide.
