The Tamil Nadu Part-time Teachers’ Federation (TNPTF) has urged the education authorities to regularise the jobs of 11,733 part-time teachers working in government schools across the State before filling in existing vacancies through the Teachers Recruitment Board. In a representation, the TNPTF said part-time teachers had been been working for 16 academic years without much change in their emoluments. They were appointed in 2016 to teach subjects such as Physical Education, Art, Tailoring, Horticulture, Computer Science and Life Sciences in government schools to expose students to co-curricular activities.“In the past 15 years, approximately 4,000 part-time teachers have retired, passed away or quit service. A major number of the remaining faculty are over the age of 50, and, therefore, will have a very short active service period ahead. We want the government authorities to regularise the employment of the existing part-time teachers before making new appointments,” TNPTF secretary S. Senthilkumar told The Hindu. The federation said that policy makers of the new government should prioritise the regularisation of part-time teachers on an urgent basis.
