The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have backed Premier Panyaza Lesufi's plan to restructure the Gauteng Traffic Wardens programme, a move that will see thousands of Amapanyaza deployed to protect government infrastructure, support crime-fighting efforts, and strengthen law enforcement across the province.
The endorsement comes after the Gauteng Provincial Government announced on Sunday that the programme would be transformed into a multi-stream safety force responsible for traffic law enforcement, visible policing, and the protection of public facilities, including schools, hospitals, clinics, and government buildings.
The EFF said the move gives effect to a proposal put forward by Gauteng Finance MEC and EFF provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga.
"This gives practical effect to a proposal advanced by EFF Gauteng Provincial Chairperson and MEC for Finance, Commissar Nkululeko Dunga, while strengthening the wardens' contribution to law enforcement, road safety, and crime prevention across the province."
The party said the redeployment of wardens could help reduce the province's dependence on private security companies while making better use of existing state resources.
