Gauteng MEC for Education, Sports, Arts and Culture, Lebogang Maile, has unveiled new plans to deal with violence and crime in the province's public education sector.

Gauteng's MEC for Education, Lebogang Maile, has unveiled a comprehensive set of safety interventions for schools across the province.

Speaking at a media briefing in Braamley on Sunday, Maile said the measures responds to increasing incidents of stabbings, vandalism, and the burning of school infrastructure.

As part of an ambitious plan, the Gauteng Department of Education will enhance security support in 422 schools and install CCTV in 606 educational institutions. Furthermore, 121 high-risk schools will receive additional protection, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and corporate partners.

Maile emphasised that these interventions are crucial as they seek to create a secure learning environment in the wake of a recent tragic incident where an 18-year-old Grade 10 learner from Mokgome Secondary School lost his life due to a stabbing in Braamfischerville, near Soweto.
