South African schools are increasingly confronting a threat that extends far beyond the classroom, with violence, gangsterism, bullying, sexual violence, and criminal activity turning places meant for learning into environments of fear.
Recent incidents in Gauteng have once again exposed the vulnerability of learners and educators, with armed suspects entering or operating near schools, while a police search uncovered weapons and other prohibited items among learners.
At Iphutheng Primary School in Alexandra, armed suspects allegedly entered the premises and fired warning shots, sending learners and educators fleeing, while near Waverley Girls’ High School, armed suspects allegedly fired shots into the air during a hijacking before fleeing the area.
The latest concerns were further underscored at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong, Carletonville, where a stop-and-search operation uncovered knives, a fork, scissors, and vapes among learners.
“We condemn these senseless acts of criminality in the strongest possible terms. Schools are sacred spaces dedicated to teaching and learning and must never become theatres of violence, fear, or intimidation,” Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile said.
