A string of Volkswagen Amaroks heading up the Sani Pass.

It’s an important time for bakkie consumers in South Africa with important new models coming from Isuzu and Toyota but let’s not forget that Volkswagen is still very much in the mix with their Amarok range.

To remind us what the Amarok is all about, VW invited us on a five-day trip covering some of the most iconic passes that started in KwaZulu Natal and ended at Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, the home of Volkswagen Africa Group.

As a reminder, the Amarok is manufactured by Ford at their Pretoria plant in Silverton. While many of the oily bits are Ford based, the Amarok’s exterior and interior are still heavily infused with VW’s DNA.

On test we had the 3.0-litre V6 PanAmericana, 222kW 2.3-litre PanAmericana and the 125kW 2.0-litre TDI Life.
