A special drive was conducted over the past week across the Avadi Police Commissionerate limits to curb ganja and narcotic-related activities.A total of 30 surveillance teams with 100 police personnel, after a briefing by the Commissioner of Police, Avadi, were deployed at 128 identified blackspots to monitor drug-related activities, collect intelligence, and identify drug sellers and consumers.The teams seized approximately 53 kg of ganja, 83 Tapentadol tablets, and many syringes. Sellers and selling spots were identified for further action.During the operation, 27 cases were registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act; five cases of public nuisance under the influence of intoxicating substances; and three cases of possession of suspicious substances and tablets. As many as 16 youngsters, aged between 17 and 19 years, were found consuming ganja. They were counselled.As many as 25 persons were arrested and remanded under the NDPS Act over the course of the one-week special drive, said Avadi City Police.In 2026 so far, 1,136 kg of ganja was seized and 67 persons were detained under the Goondas Act for drug-related offences. As many as 293 cases were registered under the NDPS Act and 474 persons were arrested for drug-related offences.The Avadi Police Commissionerate said it continues its focused surveillance and enforcement measures to prevent narcotic-related offences and curb drug abuse.
