As part of a special anti-narcotics drive carried out over the past seven days in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Police registered 33 cases and arrested 54 persons.Acting on the directions of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj, the city police have intensified action against narcotic substances across all 12 police districts. The Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) has also stepped up surveillance to track peddlers of narcotic drugs and synthetic substances, identify their networks, gather intelligence, and assist in the arrest of offenders, who are then handed over to the respective police stations for further legal action.During the week-long special drive from June 28 to July 4, police teams led by station house inspectors conducted intensive surveillance and vehicle checks at key locations across the city. Based on the operations, 33 cases were registered against persons involved in the illegal transportation, storage, and clandestine sale of narcotic substances, and 54 persons were arrested by Greater Chennai City PoliceThe seized items included 46.6 kg of ganja, 12 grams of methamphetamine, 386 tablets, eight mobile phones, ₹800 cash, three two-wheelers, and one car.Tambaram City Police said in the last 10 days of the special drive against drugs, 132 cases were booked in which 164 accused were arrested, 255 kg of ganja, and 500 painkiller tablets were seized.
