The administrations of some Greek universities have a habit of self-aggrandizing by presenting data on their ranking in international surveys.

However, the reality is often different and unavoidable. Surveys based on objective indicators show the universities’ deficit of real, not alleged, extroversion, but also the lag in international publications and research.

We have great scientists and there are many islands of excellence within Greek universities. What is needed, however, is less public relations and more focus on results, so that universities can truly open up to the outside world and stop being self-feeding systems of power and controlled mediocrity.
